US National Debt

Total Public Debt Outstanding is the sum of debt held by the public (Treasury securities sold to investors, foreign governments, and the Federal Reserve) and intragovernmental holdings (what the government owes itself, mostly trust funds like Social Security).

The figure fluctuates daily. Each April, debt typically dips for a few weeks as Treasury's General Account fills with income-tax receipts and bill issuance slows. The underlying trajectory resumes once the seasonal bulge passes.
