A gunman opened fire on tourists from partway up the Pyramid of the Moon at Mexico's Teotihuacán archaeological zone around midday on Monday, April 20, 2026, killing a 32-year-old Canadian woman and wounding 13 other foreign tourists before taking his own life.
The Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), which manages Teotihuacán, announced in Boletín 165 on April 20 that the site "will remain closed until further notice." Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted a statement on X the same day instructing the federal Security Cabinet to investigate and dispatching personnel from the Secretariat of the Interior and the Secretariat of Culture to the site.

What happened
The gunman — identified by the Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de México (FGJEM) via his Mexican electoral credential (INE) as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, 27, of Mexico City's Gustavo A. Madero borough — climbed partway up the Pyramid of the Moon, pulled out a pistol, and fired into the air at least twice before turning the weapon on tourists below. Mobile phone videos captured some of the shooting.
State police and National Guard elements converged on the pyramid. Jasso Ramírez died of a gunshot wound. Official statements to date have characterized the death as self-inflicted; FGJEM has said the cause and manner will be confirmed by autopsy.
Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live cartridges at the scene.
